The David and Lucile Packard Foundation was created in 1964 by David Packard (1912-1996), co-founder of the Hewlett-Packard Company, and Lucile Salter Packard (1914-1987). They believed that the use of private funds for public purposes and the encouragement of volunteer leadership are needed to strengthen the efforts of national institutions working for the public, thus complementing government initiatives to meet the needs of society. By allocating private funds to support public initiatives, projects fostered by universities, community groups, hospitals, environmental and conservation organizations serve as a channel for millions of individuals to participate and contribute to satisfy the needs of society as volunteers or donors.
